The pest control industry was something that Nicky had never really thought about, not until her husband, Jay, decided that working with creepy crawlies was something that he was very passionate about. Jay’s career started with working for another pest control company and teaching pest management at Tafe in Melbourne for many years. However, Nicky soon realised that with Jay’s passion and knowledge of insect biology, there was a huge potential to widening both their career paths and starting their own company.
“There was no doubt that I knew we could be successful. Jay and I moved up from Victoria to Noosa for a lifestyle change and to make a better life for our three children. In hindsight, we were probably in over our heads at the time starting a pest control business in Noosa when there was already over 200 registered pest controllers in the Sunshine Coast. The way I looked at it was if the Sunshine Coast had the most registered pest controllers than any other state in Australia, there must be a demand for it. We did not want to but into an established business but start our own from scratch. We wanted our own reputation and good will. I knew we could be successful as I never doubted Jay’s expertise. It was easy for me to market our business as I knew my husband had a reputation of being one of the most highly respected pest managers within the industry. I believed in him and looked up to him in so many ways with his work ethics. I’m still in awe of his knowledge especially on termites and black ants. He is a very clever man and I’m very proud to be in partnership with him with this business.”
Nicky believes that working on the front side of the business means having great people skills, and one of the most important activities in her day is talking to the customers. Nicky’s beliefs in great communication has also built up trustworthy relationships with other businesses, including the majority of real estates and body corporate’s in Noosa. Nicky’s drive in making Peregian Pest Control successful has made her the heart of the business. Clients love to know who they are talking to on the phone and feel important when dealing directly with the owner.
Nicky’s biggest achievement so far was becoming a finalist for Business Person of the Year 2017 Sunshine Cost Business Awards. Nicky completed a MYOB Accounting course in 2009, as well as attended various training seminars on communication skills. Networking has also played a very big role for Nicky in Peregian Pest Control and she loves to network. Having fun and having the opportunity to talk to other businesses in Noosa has contributed to Nicky being the backbone of the business. Nicky is currently the Secretary of the Noosaville Business Association and a member of Tourism Noosa. Nicky also attends all pest management conferences that are held throughout Australia with Jay.
“I love attending the pest conferences. I learn so much. There are not many women that attend. I get to talk to our suppliers and also attend seminars on everything to do with pest control. Women can play a big role in the pest industry too!”
